Yellow River Valley: A  Webquest

              You will be time  traveling back in time to the year 2000 B.C. to Ancient  China. As you travel your task will be to keep a journal of different things that you see and learn along the way.  You have just arrived on the banks of the Yellow River, also called the Huang He  river. "Huang" means "Yellow" and "He" means "River."

              The Yellow River is the northernmost of the major Chinese rivers. Look at this map and list three cities on the Huang He (Yellow) river.

              The Chinese were ruled by various dynasties. A dynasty is a time period that is ruled by a specific family. When a new dynasty came into power it would overthrow the existing dynasty.

              Look at the Time Line.  List in your travel log the name of the three dynasties with dates that  they were in power during the years 2000 BC - 771 BC.

              The Shang dynasty is the first dynasty to be documented with reliable historical evidence.  Thousands of archaeological finds  provide evidence about the Shang dynasty, which endured roughly from 1700 to 1027 B.C.  Use the links below and list in your travel log six  facts about the Shang dynasty, two from each link.

              A complex picture writing system was developed by the ancient Chinese using forms we know of as ideograms, pictograms, and phonograms. The writing was inscribed on oracle bones, which were used to keep records and tell fortunes. Here is another picture of oracle bones.  What is the URL of this page?  HINT: Web Address

              Confucius (551-479 BC), was regarded as a great thinker and educator of ancient China.  List four biographical facts about Confucius's life.

              Take a look at these ancient  Chinese bronzes?  During what dynasty were they produced?  In what museum can I  find these bronzes?

              Look at this picture of a  A Vessel from the Shang Dynasty 1600 -1100 BC. Of what  material  is it made?  What do the small decorations look like?

              The dragon occupies a very important position in Chinese mythology.
              It shows up in art, literature, poetry, architecture, and  songs.  The origin of Chinese dragons is unknown, but certainly pre-dates the written history.  List two details from the  Chinese dragon link which  might be symbolic of  the Chinese culture.  Click on the Chinese Dragon picture.  It is an image link.  What do you see?
